Gluten Free Vacation, Uh Oh!!

I spent a week in Ocean City Maryland with my brother, 6 nieces, and Mom recently. It was really nice seeing my family.  As with all family gatherings there was a lot of eating and merriment.  At one point I had to tell them I was trying a gluten free diet and basically wasn't eating anything that was made with flour.  It made it easy to explain.  Once said they were very helpful in their attempts to keeping me on the gluten free path.

The first night we went to dinner was a learning experience for everyone.  When you’re dining out…what is the first thing the server brings to the table after the menus?

We were all hungry and my new nemesis was warm and fragrant staring right at me, within reach a basket of homemade rolls.  Should I cheat a little…? I did think about it, No, I asked for some celery and carrot sticks and that worked out fine.  On to the main course, many restaurants have gluten free options and it is always easy to order extra vegetables, baked potatoes, or rice, not what you want when you go out, I say buck up do you want to feel good or eat what your body is trying to reject?

For me the answer is eating what makes me feel good.

Many chances to eat wheat came my way over the week, I didn’t make the trip to the donut store, or enjoy funnel cakes on the boardwalk, and Philadelphia style hoagies were off the menu this trip as well.  I did enjoy Wackenfuss dark chocolate truffles with chocolate, mint, and raspberry, decadent, delicious, and satisfying.  My eyes are starting to roll back in my sockets as I type.

This time of year it is easy to eat a plant based diet because of summers bounty, blueberries, corn on the cob, watermelon, sun tea, vegetable soups, homemade hummus with Mary's Gone Crackers, tomatoes, lets go fishing and see if anything is biting.  Be creative Google gluten free, dare to feel great.

Between watching my food choices, the salt water and sea air I returned from vacation feeling amazing, a little bit tan, and filled with gratitude.

I believe for most people, if you make it to 50 congratulations, that was the easy part.  Now you really have to pay attention if you want your body to serve you well for the next 50 years.  I am paying attention and feeling the benefits.  How do you feel???

God Bless,
