Squat to Poop, Correct alignment when nature calls matters.

I have a foot stool in my bathroom at home.  What for you may ask.  To comfortably eliminate during a bowel movement in a natural comfortable position.  “Ha” you may say,  well I say back “Ahh HA!”  A stool under my feet to raise my knees above the opening of the colon is a simple solution to return to  nature’s original positioning during the process of elimination.

I have been doing this for MANY years.  We even have a box in the restroom at work.  One day one of our consultants asked, “ I have been coming here for 6 months and there is always a cardboard box in the restroom what is up with that?”  When I told him the reason, with a bit of trepidation and embarrassment. He really didn’t seem to believe me. 

To me this seems so reasonable I can’t imagine why everyone doesn’t at least try it for a week or two to see what kind of results they get.  It’s not like anyone will be watching, what harm can it do?

Hands down the best posture for pooping is squatting.

Sitting, obstructs the passage of waste through the colon. Seated during elimination causes strain on the delicate tissues in the anus and the elimination process is interrupted by the natural muscle constriction of the colon. Leaving an incomplete bowel movement.

Most of the world doesn't use a toilet for support and there are medical ramifications over time with incorrect alignment when you have to go.  So dear readers here is a video on a stool to help with alignment during elimination.  Personally any short stool works perfectly for me.  Experts recommend the squat position for patients that are pregnant, children, have Crohns disease, diverticulosis, hemorrhoids, constipation, and other digestive issues.

  1. Hi Teri,

    Using a footstool is a poor substitute for genuine squatting. On a 1 to 10 scale it's about a 2 or 3. Most of the world squats and would laugh at this uncomfortable and ineffective method.

    You've probably seen my site,, which is where the Squatty Potty people learned about the benefits of squatting. It's unfortunate that they're pandering to the public's ignorance about squatting. All children can squat easily and most adults can regain the ability if they practice. My site has instructions for making your own squatting device (see FAQ#6).

    As a yogini, you know about malasana. Mala means excretion. I hope you will tell your students the truth about what it means to squat.
