A Cooler Attic for $ummer $avings.

After the most amazing April weather I can remember for many years, summer is quickly coming to us here in South Florida, heads up; it is on the way North.

We have a single story home and it gets seriously hot in our attic during the summer.  I asked Harley about an attic fan and his opinion was an attic fan is likely to save about as much money in cooling as it would cost to run.

Not one to give up that easily on what I think is a good idea the next time we went to Home Depot I decided to wander over to the roofing department and look at what was available to help me with my cooling mission.  I have no idea how hot it gets in the attic but it will take your breath away in the middle of the day. It seems logical to me if we can get it down from desperately hot to just hot our home would be cooler, and the air conditioner would run less.

The chamber of commerce tells visitors we have 237 sunny days per year here in Palm Beach County, I would bet of the 128 days left most of those days are only partially cloudy.  Having said that, guess what we found.

Yep, a solar attic fan.  I thought it was fairly priced, it didn't take Harley any time to install it, and it just runs all by itself almost every day of the year, at this point it seems to work great.  The staggeringly hot, dog days of summer have not arrived yet so I don't know how well it will work, so far so good.

Will it save us money, I just don’t know yet, am I happy about the purchase, yes I am.

God Bless,

  1. Teri, I had 2 solar attic fans installed after Katrina and they have really helped. It was so hot without fans or a/c those first few weeks I never wanted to experience that again. My poor dogs were miserable too. One solar fan is in the attic over the garage - which isn't air conditioned and is where I do laundry. Both fans are still working great and I don't sweat doing laundry!
