Gary Carter and the Signature

Gary Carter is one of our local celebrities, we have many here in Palm Beach County.  Gary earned his fame playing baseball with the Montreal Expos and the New York Mets over an almost 20 year career, they called him the Kid.

Gary is a funny guy.  He and his son came in to a computer store I was working in many years ago.  My family loves baseball so I knew who he was.  We got chatting and when it was time for him to pay his bill he told me for years people have been taking checks from him and not cashing them thinking his signature would be worth something in the future.  I told him there would be no worry with us I would deposit the check that very night.

He laughed and we continued to talk. I told him about Uncle Russ, he had a secret in his basement and as kids we were not allowed down there.  When he died I found out that in the 1930's he discovered a mud unique to New Jersey, and ever since then this mud has been used by umpires before every game to rub the shine off new baseballs.

Gary is a man of faith.  He has a rare form of brain cancer.  It is difficult to watch his public decline, I suppose if you live publicly you die by the same rules.    Things don’t look good for The Kid he is in my prayers.

God Bless,
