Remembering Sandra

Amy and Sandra
This time last year our beloved Sandra was slipping away from us.  Thinking about my friend now that she is gone has given me pause to reflect on some funny times.  Sandra was never one to mince words.

One time I went to visit her and she was feeling particularly bad that day.  I went in my normal bubbly self and after we had talked for a while she looked at me and said, “You are really pissing me off being so happy.”  I asked her if I should leave and she said, “I think that would be best.”  So, off I went. The next Saturday I called her to see if she wanted some company and she did.  When I arrived she said she was so glad I wasn’t cross with her.  How can you be angry with someone that is defining her boundaries, within her own home, when she doesn’t feel well? Answer, you can’t.

Another time, I found a beautiful bouquet of chrysanthemums; I called her to see if I could stop by for just a quick moment that I had something for her.  When I arrived and she saw the flowers she said, “I am so happy you didn’t bring me vitamins!”

Sandra used the most wonderful words.  I actually purchased a used dictionary to keep up with her.  The last time I saw her she was telling me about one of the nurses aids and said the person was obsequious, another word I didn’t know.  When I looked it up the meaning was obedient or dutiful.  Then it said sycophant, one who uses complements to gain self serving favor from another, or ass kisser.  When I read that I laughed and laughed, I knew exactly what she meant then.   I am a better person in many ways to have known this interesting, intelligent, compassionate woman.

She was a mentor, teacher, and my friend!
