Raspberry Memories

I was at the market today and raspberries were on sale.  Immediately my mouth started to water and my heart was filled with warm memories of being a kid in Grama and Grampa Olenick's back yard..  I am not sure if I love raspberries because they are so tasty or if it is the happy memories I have of those times.

Grama and Grampa lived in Woodlynne New Jersey,  the backyard this time of the year was alive with gardening, friends, and raspberry bushes bursting with flavor. During our spring visit,  a long drive from Upstate New York, the first thing I would do is head to the backyard and see if the time was ripe to pick berries.  If it was oh the joy.

Behind their home ran a one lane dirt alley and all the neighbors would walk by and greet each other, everyone knew everyone, I remember it being a friendly community always sharing the harvest from their gardens with each other.

Not being a raspberry expert I don't know if all raspberries have thorns, I can tell you we had to suffer the thorns to be able to enjoy the fruit and it was worth the price of the scrapes and punctures I endured.

Besides having a love affair with my memories of raspberries they are good for you too. This beautiful red fruit possesses the nutritional value of B-6, folic acid, riboflavin, vitamin K, E,and C minerals like potassium, manganese, copper, and iron.  I hear about ORAC values all the time and raspberries have a value of 4900 per 100 grams, making them one of the top ranked fruits and for the icing on the berry they are low in calories and a rich source of fiber.
Eating is one of my favorite pastimes, and today I am loving the flavor of raspberries.
