A Mom’s Diplomacy

I was grocery shopping yesterday. Near by a young mother was shopping when her two young children came running up behind her with packages of junk food. “Mommy, Mommy, can we have this?” She stopped shopping, turned her focus on them and gently said, “Can you read the ingredients?” After trying unsuccessfully, Mama said, “If you can’t read the ingredients you can’t have the snack, please put it back.”

I wanted to give her a standing ovation her message was so powerful yet sweetly delivered.  I was actually standing already but the thought was there. I asked her, “What are you going to do when they can read the ingredients?” She got a lovely little sly smile on her face, “Then I will ask them what those things do for you.”

I know it is difficult for young mothers to say no when there is so much temptation in stores, this one seemed to have an interesting approach.
